The area along the Fox River where McHenry now lies originally served as a fishing and hunting ground for the Potawatomie Native Americans. McHenry County was created in 1836 and named after Major William McHenry, who also served on the area's first government. The city of McHenry originally served as a resort area, thanks to its proximity to the Fox River and the numerous surrounding lakes, streams, and hills, which are the result of glacier recession from the area following the last ice age.

Today, the city of McHenry is home to 26,992 residents and is nicknamed "The Heart of the Fox." The area has undergone significant residential growth and expansion, leading to commercial development in the city's three major districts: Main Street, Riverside Drive, and Green Street. Some of McHenry's famous former residents include Jason Faunt, Jace Sayler, Gary Adams, and Brian Miller.
